never not working

Packin' zines, drawing feathers, and now adding vintage photographs? Sure why not.

When I first opened the icefloe store I wanted it to be a reflection of this blog. A mix of my own photographs and some nice old photograph things, maybe some pieces sold on behalf of friends whose work I am in love with. I started collecting a few carefully selected vintage photographs in their original, beautiful and impossibly well preserved card sleeves from different eras. I love everything about them and they along with my oft overlooked Olympus Trip 35 camera are now looking for new homes >> in the shop <<

Homelab Behind the Scenes.

People are always asking me about processing film at home (in my kitchen) so I thought I'd post up a bit of stuff about the Homelab. I'm still learning but I feel like I've got comfortable with the whole process, and if I can do it, anyone can. This is by no means a comprehensive guide to processing B&W film in the home, just a few notes from my adventures in home processing.
I got all of my kit when I bought my darkroom from Gumtree a few years ago. It sat around gathering dust before I realised I had a bunch of B&W 35mm that needed processing, and I could do that myself. I do this in my kitchen where I have running water for rinsing (and the cat can't get in the way) but I guess you could do it anywhere where you have space/running water.

I hadn't processed film since high school, thus I was/am a bit rusty. To begin with, I used this guide HERE. I still have a printed copy of it covered in food and chemicals in my kitchen with my recipe books, in fact, and I refer to it if I'm (hungover) stuck. Its handy.

Chemicals are easy to pick up online, I get mine from Silverprint. Store them wisely, I had to throw some developer out because it wasn't kept airtight. Sad trombone. I always keep a bottle of water under the sink at room temperature for mixing developer as well, at this time of the year its a faff to get tap water to the right temperature.

I really, really recommend using the Massive Dev app - its not cheap, but I'd be lost without it. You pop in the film and speed, developer brand, and you can fiddle around with temperature for when that bottle of water just won't stay at 20 degrees, and it gives you times for various stages of the process. If you plan to process film at home and you aren't good with numbers/maths, get this app. Its not cheap but I'd be lost without it.
I really hate rinsing film, it takes forever (ten minutes) and you get cold hands. But do not skip/be lazy with this step. I did that once and now there is a fix stain in the middle of this.
Wu-wuuuh. I'm probably going to start using bottled water for my final rinse as well, just to get any London gunk off of the negatives at the end. That's right London, you got gunk.
I squeegee my film in the shower and hang it to dry in the bathroom where we get the least dust (or so I tell myself). We have a cat though, so dust is rife. I try and process films first thing on a weekend morning, so if possible I can scan it in later in the day. I try and get in there before any dust can settle. I hate dust. I'm still trying to work around the dust.
I got a big job lot of film sleeves off of the eBay, in case you need some. Someone else is always getting rid of that kind of shit, snap it up because you will want to store these babies in something that keeps them clean.

I really, really hate scanning film, so I'm not going to go into that. It takes forever, and my scanner has started to do weird things like crop or totally skip frames - which is why I am blogging about this instead of blogging actual photographs this week.
If you process film in your home, do you have any tips to share? Please do!

Have fun....!

Print Store Updates!

Just a little update to let you know that I am offering FREE SHIPPING in my print store until the end of January - just pop in the code 2013AHOY at checkout.

I've also just listed a bunch of new prints, and done a bit of house work in general about the place, so now is a good time to pop back and visit if you haven't in a while. I'm hoping to get some more functional things listed in the new year, so stay tuned.

You can like my store/blog on facebook [HERE] if you are so inclined, for updates and such (and I promise, no spam!)

Postcards.

Late last year I took a trip to the beautiful city of Cambridge to visit the Scott Polar Research Institute. It was pretty magical. While there I took this photograph in the markets held in the centre of town. The square smelt of mulled wine and magic, my fingers were freezing off and I was trying to work out if I could get a huge wreath home on the train.

I really love this photograph. Its not overly festive, but still captures Christmas in the UK. Cold, clear, beautiful. I wanted to get postcards made from it to send to my loved ones this season instead of generic post cards from the supermarket. Something a bit different. I love the medium of postcards and the thought that they might brighten the day of every postman between here and their destination, so it seemed like a great idea.
I then thought why not offer these up to other people to send! So now in the shop this holiday season I have 5 packs of 8 Christmas postcards for sale. The backs of these (the "functional side") were designed by my good friend Morgan (my "in house designer" who also made my website logo for me!) and they are printed on gloss card in standard postcard size.
Each pack is hand-wrapped in brown paper, sealed with a small ice floe sticker. Lil' secret - that paper is baking paper. Its my new favourite thing in the world to wrap things in!
All prints from the shop go out with this little special touch now as well.

Postcards are available for purchase HERE.

And don't forget you only have until Sunday to enter the PRINT SWAP!

Photographs of Photographs

One of the weirdest parts of having a print store I'm finding is having to take photographs of photographs. I'm sure its not necessarily necessary, but it feels nice to give them a sense of context.

Its kind of fun though. It always starts off very organised

But by the end of the day my front room looks like this
I think I am trying to create the illusion of a photograph on your bedside table, or something?
Anyway, that's what I've been doing all weekend. New prints are starting to dribble into the print store and will continue to do so as the week progresses.

I'm also selling a bunch of stuff on eBay right now, which you can check out HERE.

BTW we have a kitten now, her name is Cricket.

teeny tiny worlds

I've had this small collection of stone beads for a while now, waiting to find their purpose. One day it struck me that they look like tiny planets.
One spring Saturday later and I have made a new collection for the store - tiny worlds. Each stone bead is paired with a complimentary chain for you to carry with you on your wrist. Maybe alone, maybe teamed to make a solar system.
Its strange how such tiny beads can all be so deep and different. Some have been paired with even smaller beads (moons!) and some are giants, not unlike our own friend Jupiter. I obviously have had fun making up stories for each of them, and picking names from my book of classical mythology using a strict 'open on a page, pick the best name from that page' method (that is what the science guys do too right?) - so far my favourite is FORNAX - the goddess of the oven that bakes the bread.
The bonus is that these guys are also super cute and nice to wear, I sold a bunch at the Muswell Hill Market and have had orders from friends rolling in. You can pick up yours in store now - and if you can't decide which planet you want to keep as your own, there is the MYSTERY WORLD option - let me choose for you from the vast universe of options (er yeah thats the tin I keep the beads in)
